This course reviews diversity of origin, dialectal diversity, and different levels in each of the skills that may be encountered.
Academic Language Development:
This course explores the vocabulary needs of native and heritage students and how to develop it to the highest levels.
Written Expression:
This course reviews objectives for developing written expression, problems, and strategies for developing it in Spanish and heritage classes.
Oral Expression:
This course reviews objectives for developing oral expression, problems, and strategies for developing it in Spanish and heritage classes.
Reading Comprehension:
This course reviews objectives for developing reading comprehension, problems, and strategies for developing it in Spanish and heritage classes.
Listening Comprehension:
This course reviews objectives for developing listening comprehension, problems, and strategies for developing it in Spanish and heritage classes.
Interpersonal Communication:
This course reviews objectives for developing interpersonal communication in writing or orally, problems, and strategies for developing it in Spanish and heritage classes.
Translanguaging and Cognates:
This course explores different strategies for using students’ knowledge of English to develop Spanish and vice versa.
Development of Effective Lessons for Spanish Classes:
This course explores the basic elements for developing effective lessons for heritage or native Spanish classes.
Reading-Based Units:
This course reviews unit planning through didactic exploitation of complete novels in Spanish.
Development of Reading and Writing Skills in Spanish Class:
This course reviews the keys to developing reading and writing skills in heritage or native Spanish-speaking students from students who cannot read or write in their language.
Backward Planning:
This course presents the keys to planning units based on final exams or assignments.
Beginning of the Year:
This course reviews the first lessons to start the year effectively, including expectations, routines, and activities to build relationships with students.
Personalization in Language Classes:
This course analyzes the students’ level of competence to create lessons or activities that allow the student to use the language to express their ideas, feelings, preferences, and opinions about their lives and their environment.
Student Relationships and Classroom Management:
This course reviews the keys to creating a positive and working relationship with students, as well as class norms and expectations.
Culturally Responsive Teaching:
This course raises issues about what it means to be culturally responsive in the Spanish classroom and how it is maintained in lessons.
Empowering Students through Culture:
This course models various cultural activities to make Hispanic culture more visible in school and the community, such as Model United Nations or the International Fair.
