Eva Marquez Velandria, PhD.

Eva Márquez obtained her PhD from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 2013. With over 25 years of experience in teaching Literature and Spanish language, both in Venezuela and the United States, she has dedicated the last 10 years to teaching Spanish to heritage and native speakers in Denver Public Schools at the high school level. Dr. Márquez is an expert in the development of literacy programs and has dedicated herself to preparing teachers who teach Spanish to heritage and native language speakers to bridge the gap between Diglossia and Bilingualism. In addition to her teaching work, she has developed a literacy program for Fe y Alegría schools in El Salvador and for 6 schools sponsored by the Del Sur electric company, for which she received the Pedagogical Excellence Award (2005). She has also worked as a collaborator in the development of the Spanish Language Arts curriculum for Denver Public Schools (2014-2017), for which she received the collective award for excellence in teamwork Seal of Biliteracy-SLA curriculum (2016).

Awarded the Bilingual Secondary Teacher of the Year 2023 Award

Inmaculada Martín – Hernández, PhD.

Awarded the 2023 Secondary Bilingual Teacher of the Year by CO-CABE, Dr. Martín has over 20 years of experience in bilingual education, in countries such as Spain, Bulgaria, and France. In the last twelve years, she has focused her career on educating native and heritage students in New Mexico and Colorado. Dr. Martín obtained her doctorate from the Complutense University of Madrid in 2013, with the theme “Trauma Narrative in El Salvador”. In addition to her training in literature, she has trained as a teacher of Spanish language and literature and Spanish as a second language. She has combined her teaching career with attendance as a listener and speaker at numerous conferences and training sessions. In the last five years, she has developed curriculum and teacher training in Denver public schools. In her pedagogical work at North High School, she has taught Spanish Language and Literature at all levels, AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Spanish Literature and Culture, and college classes at Metropolitan University of Denver, taught at the high school level. Currently, she is the head of the department and coach of the language department teachers. Her passion for bilingual education has led her to be an activist for student rights both in her school and in the district.

Fernando Pabón – Ferro

Bilingual educator with 21 years of experience in Colombia and the United States teaching foreign languages, including English and Spanish. He began his career in his native Colombia as an English teacher in middle and high school. Additionally, he had the opportunity to lead the English Department of the school where, together with excellent educators, he created curriculum and materials for various classes such as English, literature, science, and social studies in English. Since arriving in the United States, he has focused on the development of Spanish as a second and first language, where he has written curricula for both. He also creates resources and assessments for school districts and trains teachers. His research work has focused on teaching Spanish as a foreign language and on courses for heritage and native Spanish speakers. This latter group was the essential basis for his master’s thesis, creating a working path for the district. He has also been a presenter at various national conferences such as CCFLT and AATSP.
